Green Resources

There are many reasons why people choose to go green. For many, it stems from a desire to do their part in reducing the consumption of natural resources and protecting the environment for future generations. By going green, one can keep the water cleaner and the air more breathable and minimize the amount of waste that can potentially pollute the environment. On top of the positive impact on the environment, people who go green at home often have the added benefit of saving money on their energy bills.

Most people recognize recycling as an eco-friendly activity that is widely promoted and practiced. Items that can be recycled at home include plastic bottles, aluminum, and paper. Local and state websites are good resources for further information on recycling programs. As important as it is, recycling is only a portion of what it means to be green at home. For people who are in the market for a new home, they may consider buying one that is made with the environment and reduced energy consumption in mind. A new green home may be made using recycled or renewable materials, have solar panels, and have wood flooring or carpeting made of bamboo or other renewable materials.

For people who have no intention of moving, living in a green home often means making repairs or improvements around their current house. People should explore the interior and exterior of their homes for areas that may make one's home less energy-efficient. Often, these areas allow drafts of air to leak into or out of the home, and as a result, homeowners need to use their heating and air conditioning more than necessary. Replacing insulation that is no longer effective is yet another improvement or repair that can be made to improve energy efficiency and make a house as green as possible. Problem areas may include the attic, basement, air ducts, windows and doors, and wall areas that directly lead to the outside. Home improvements may be made to conserve energy as well. One of the most efficient and effective improvements is as simple as buying a programmable thermostat. For maximum savings, one should set the thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer.
